Project Brainstorm W13
From
a piece of fiction (short story, section of novel, or a play) choose a female
character on whom to focus, and create a project that discusses some of the
following questions:
What is the author’s attitude towards her? (how can
you tell?) What is your attitude towards her? How do (at least 2) other characters view her? How
does she view herself?
I would like to revisit Hedda Gabler. She is a complex character
to analysis. I originally analyzed her husband because his attitude towards her
allowed me to see what type of man he was. So, it will be fun to analyze her
character and maybe I can even shed a little light on why she was so
manipulative.
Choose
a reading selection. Then choose one of the following questions, and write an
argument in response to it:
How
does the work reflect the period in which it was written?
What
does the work reveal about the cultural behavior contemporary to it?
How
are class differences presented in the work? Are characters aware or unaware of
the economic and social forces that affect their lives?
I would like to explore “Memoirs of a
Declining Ryukyuan Woman” regarding the time
it was written and how this piece of literature reveals the cultural behavior
of the Ryukyuan people (men and women alike).
I believe this piece clearly reveals the class difference and shows the
characters were aware of the economic and social forces that affected their
lives to such an extent that they rather identify themselves with anything
other than Ryukyuan because of the class differences.
Choose
a reading selection. Explore the relationship between elements of the
selection. For example: how does setting influence character development?
I would examine how the
setting of the prison of Leningrad
influenced Anna Akhmatova’s
character. I believe she became hopeless at the end because of the pain she
endured knowing that her son was imprisoned and the fact that she could not do
anything about it. In the beginning we know she was a strong voice against
Russian symbolism
Hi Tiffany! You have great ideas for possible topics for your project! I did the first prompt for one of our projects, using the play Tartuffe. (It was great to analyze the women in the play and give feedback about the author's view of the women, my view of them, etc.). I really would love to see what you'd write for that first prompt and to get different ways she was manipulative and how you feel the author view's her/describes her being manipulative as well as how you think other character's view her and the manipulative things she does. Also, do the other characters even know she is being manipulative? Or do they find out at the end? Can't wait to read what else you come up with for your project, good luck!
ReplyDeleteHi Tiffany, all of your three prompts are very good topics to choose from. For the first topic and your decision to use Hedda is a great one because she is one of the main female characters in the story and like you said her personality is interesting to analyze. I am interested to see what you may write for that prompt and for Hedda Gabler. She is truly a unique person who like you said is very manipulative. It made me wonder why she didn't just leave Tesman if she was so unhappy, I am sure she could have found someone else that fit her style of living. I am also interested to see why she was so manipulative. The second one is also a good one and using Memoirs of a Declining Ryukyuan woman is great and you already know what direction you could take which is a huge advantage. I wonder which prompt you will end up choosing, and good luck on your project.
ReplyDeleteHowdy Tiffany! I can see how in depth and thoughtful you're thinking towards each of these topics. I've done the first option you weigh in a previous project and can attest to the depth and fun it can be to delve into the psyche and actions of one of the many female characters we've encountered this semester. Your choice of possible analysis for the second prompt listed is ripe with opportunity to delve into the historical context of the time. You clearly know exactly where you would go with this prompt and can see this being a wonderful option to move forwards with. As for your third project prompt option, once again your possible choice of reading is perfectly suited for that option. Overall, great possible selections that work seamlessly within the realms of each prompt. Good luck on your project.
