Reading Notes W9, Part A, From THe Take of Kieu

From The Tale of Kieu

Even though the tale begins with Kieu, Van, and Vuong Quan the children of a well-known burgher in the clan of Vuong, a man of modest wealth and middle rank.  Kieu is the main character of the tale. She is a beautiful young woman Kieu possessed a keener, deeper charm, surpassing her sister Van in talents and in looks.
Kieu is wise and compassionate, you can see that in her response to Dam Tien fates. A well of pity lay within Kieu’s heart: as soon as she had heard her tears burst forth.  “How sorrowful is women’s lot!” she cried (552). Not only that she dreams about her as well to the point she believes that her fate is the same and, in a way, curses herself.
She meets Kim Throng, a scion of the noblest stock. Apparently, they were neighbors all alone. Their hearts became entangled. They She has left her golden hairpin which he finds (golden hairpin meant young 15 and ready for marriage would pin their hair up)
They meet in secret while her family was away. As their relationship intensifies Kim find it’s hard to control his lust for her, but she will not allow their relationship to be tarnished by one night. She stands firm and protects her Chasity (561). She will not allow her love turn to shame.
Unfortunately, Kieu met a common sorrowful fate as she predicted. Forced by her own conscience to save her father and pay his dept for a crime he has committed. She is bargained for and shamed. She thought about killing herself. Upon the table lay a knife at hand -she grabbed it, hid it wrapped inside her scarf (566-567).
She escapes with a man who she barely knows who tricks her. She is forced into prostitution. Thuc deceived Kieu, he was already married. She begged him to make their relationship clear, but it was too late. His wife was furious and forces her to be a slave. This time Kieu attempts to take her life again but is unsuccessful.
Finally, Kieu meets an honorable man, Lord Tu. Kieu reveals the injustice she endured and how Wuxi and Linzi betrayed her.  He is angered by what was done to Kieu and mustered men, named captains -he bade them to rush off with flags unfurled and race the stairs. Red banners would show all his troops the way: one wind bound for Wuxi, one fore Linzi (573). While the nun, the woman chamberlain, and Thuc will be guest to witness justice being served.
Kieu gives Lord Tu wisdom that he foolishly heeds too which caused both of their demise. She was recaptured and throws herself in the river but is found by the nun.

In the end, Kieu was wrong, her fate was rewritten. After fifteen She ended up with her first love and her family.
